Enforcement Begins for Contaminated Recycling Rules

Enforcement Begins for Contaminated Recycling Rules

February 23, 2018

GRANDE PRAIRIE – Residents will soon need to think twice before tossing recyclables in their blue bags, or they may not be collected.
As of April 2, Aquatera Utilities curbside collection contractor, Prairie Disposal, will begin enforcing new control guidelines that are being passed down by those who purchase the recyclables.
Materials with grease or food particles cannot be accepted for curbside collection or at the Eco Centre. Some of these items include pizza boxes, donut boxes or containers where food particles or grease can soak into containers. These items would be considered contaminated and not fit for recycling.

“Global recycling markets are becoming more stringent, so in turn, we need to be strict in enforcing these rules as they are coming directly from our buyers,” says Tammy Savidan, Recycling Coordinator at Prairie Disposal Ltd.
To help, please ensure that all waste is clean and dry before putting it out for curbside collection. Items accepted in blue bags include paper, card board, coffee cups, hard plastics labelled #1-7, clean tin food cans such as soup cans, tissue boxes etc.

Aquatera will continue their efforts to educate its customers about recycling streams, while also reminding residents that they will also need to be more careful about the cleanliness of the items they do recycle.
